Understanding Tissue Salts: How They Differ from Homeopathy

One of the questions I’m asked most often is:

“Are tissue salts the same as homeopathy?”

The short answer is no.

Although tissue salts and homeopathic remedies are both natural medicines and are often stocked side by side, they are based on two very different systems of healing.

Understanding those differences can help you appreciate why I often recommend tissue salts alongside a personalised homeopathic treatment plan.

The Origins of Tissue Salts

The tissue salt system was developed in the late 1800s by the German physician Wilhelm Schüssler.

Dr. Schüssler believed that the body’s cells require specific mineral salts to function efficiently. According to his Biochemic Theory, disturbances in the balance and utilisation of these mineral salts may contribute to ill health.

Rather than prescribing remedies according to the Law of Similars, as in classical homeopathy, Schüssler developed a system based on what he called the Law of Deficiency—using small doses of naturally occurring tissue salts to support normal cellular function.

Today, tissue salts remain one of the most widely used systems of natural medicine throughout the world.

Tissue Salts vs Homeopathy

Although the tablets may look similar, the philosophy behind each system is quite different.

Tissue SaltsClassical Homeopathy
Based on Dr. Schüssler‘s Law of Deficiency.Based on the Law of Similars (“like cures like”).
Uses only naturally occurring mineral salts found within the body.Uses thousands of substances from the plant, mineral and animal kingdoms.
Primarily supports healthy cellular function according to biochemic principles.Matches the person’s unique physical, emotional and mental symptom picture.
Usually selected according to common symptom patterns and body systems.Always individualised to the whole person.

I often explain it this way:

Tissue salts work more like nutritional “cell supporters”, while homeopathy works by finding the remedy that most closely matches the individual person.

The two systems complement one another beautifully and are frequently used together in clinical practice.

The Twelve Foundational Tissue Salts

Dr. Schüssler originally identified twelve essential tissue salts, each with its own traditional role within the body.

Rather than memorising twelve separate remedies, it helps to understand them in their natural families.

The “Builders” – The Phosphates (Phos)

The Phosphates are traditionally associated with growth, nourishment, repair and energy production.

These include:

  • Calcarea Phosphorica – bone growth, teeth, healing and recovery.
  • Ferrum Phosphoricum – oxygen transport, early inflammation and immune response.
  • Kali Phosphoricum – the well-known nerve tissue salt, traditionally used during mental fatigue, stress, nervous exhaustion and emotional depletion.
  • Magnesia Phosphorica – muscles, nerves, cramping and spasmodic pain.
  • Natrum Phosphoricum – healthy acid-alkaline balance and digestive metabolism.

The “Eliminators” – The Sulphates (Sulph)

The Sulphates are often thought of as the body’s cleansing and elimination salts.

They support the body’s natural processes of repair, detoxification and renewal.

These include:

  • Calcarea Sulphurica – healthy skin repair and connective tissue healing.
  • Kali Sulphuricum – skin renewal, oxygen exchange and healthy cell turnover.
  • Natrum Sulphuricum – traditionally regarded as the liver and water-regulating tissue salt, supporting fluid balance and normal elimination.

The Structural Salts

These tissue salts help maintain the body’s framework and connective tissues.

  • Calcarea Fluorica – elasticity of ligaments, tendons, veins, skin and tooth enamel.
  • Calcarea Phosphorica – bones, cartilage and growth.
  • Silicea – connective tissue, skin, hair, nails and healthy wound healing.

The Fluid Regulators

Healthy hydration relies on a careful balance of fluids moving in and out of our cells.

  • Natrum Muriaticum helps regulate the body’s fluid balance and is traditionally associated with mucous membranes, watery discharges and hydration.

The Congestion Salt

Kali Muriaticum has long been associated with congestion affecting the ears, nose, throat and respiratory system, particularly when thick white mucus is present.

The Expanded Tissue Salt System

While Dr. Schüssler originally developed twelve tissue salts, later practitioners expanded the system to include 15 additional biochemic salts, creating what is often referred to as the 27 Tissue Salt System.

Although the expanded system is less well known than the original twelve salts, many experienced practitioners find it invaluable when creating more individualised treatment programmes in complex or long-standing cases.

The additional tissue salts include:

  • No. 13 – Kali Arsenicosum (Potassium Arsenite): Traditionally used to support chronic skin conditions, eczema and persistent inflammatory states.
  • No. 14 – Kali Iodatum (Potassium Iodide): Associated with healthy glandular function, lymphatic congestion and chronic respiratory complaints.
  • No. 15 – Natrum Salicylicum (Sodium Salicylate): Traditionally used for joint and muscle discomfort, neuralgia and recovery following physical exertion.
  • No. 16 – Calcarea Arsenicosa (Calcium Arsenite): Used where there is poor vitality, chronic skin disorders and reduced cellular nutrition.
  • No. 17 – Cuprum Arsenicosum (Copper Arsenite): Traditionally selected for muscular cramping, spasms and nervous system support.
  • No. 18 – Manganum Sulphuricum (Manganese Sulphate): Associated with fatigue, healthy red blood cell production and connective tissue support.
  • No. 19 – Niccolum Sulphuricum (Nickel Sulphate): Traditionally used to support digestion, metabolism and chronic digestive disturbances.
  • No. 20 – Arsenicum Iodatum (Arsenic Iodide): Often selected to support respiratory health, chronic catarrhal conditions and certain skin complaints.
  • No. 21 – Lithium Muriaticum (Lithium Chloride): Traditionally associated with uric acid metabolism, joint health and maintaining healthy fluid balance.
  • No. 22 – Cadmium Iodatum (Cadmium Iodide): Used by some practitioners for glandular congestion, tissue swelling and sluggish lymphatic function.
  • No. 23 – Ferrum Arsenicosum (Iron Arsenite): Traditionally used where fatigue, poor circulation and reduced vitality accompany chronic illness.
  • No. 24 – Natrum Nitricum (Sodium Nitrate): Associated with circulation, healthy blood flow and fluid regulation.
  • No. 25 – Kalium Cyanatum (Potassium Cyanide): Traditionally used to support the nervous system and muscular tension in carefully selected cases.
  • No. 26 – Natrum Hypochlorosum (Sodium Hypochlorite): Used by some practitioners to support lymphatic drainage, immune function and the body’s natural cleansing processes.
  • No. 27 – Arsenicum Album (Arsenic Trioxide): Traditionally included within the expanded biochemic system for chronic digestive weakness, fatigue and reduced vitality.

Although the expanded tissue salt system is less familiar than the original twelve, many experienced biochemic practitioners find these additional salts invaluable for creating more individualised treatment programmes when the foundational salts alone are not enough.

Why I Use Tissue Salts in Practice

One of the reasons I love tissue salts is their simplicity.

They are gentle, easy to take and can be used across many stages of life, from growing children to busy adults, pregnancy, recovery and healthy ageing.

I occassionally recommend tissue salts to complement a person’s broader treatment plan, particularly in pregnancy or where there are signs of stress, dental issues, connective tissue weakness or increased nutritional demands.

Choosing the right tissue salt isn’t simply about matching a condition. It’s about understanding what your body is asking for and selecting the salts that best support your individual needs.
