Chronic Fatigue – How Homeopathy Can Help — Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is more than just being tired. It’s a deep, ongoing exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest and often worsens with even small amounts of activity. Many people develop chronic fatigue after viral infections, stress, or periods of overwhelm.
Every person with chronic fatigue has a unique story, on how they came to be living with CFS, which is why personalised prescribing is so important. Supporting gut health, nervous system regulation, and overall vitality (balanced vital force) are also part of the homeopathic approach.
Common Initial Triggers
Chronic fatigue often starts after a particular stress on the body or mind. Personally I believe it always starts in the mind from an emotion that has affected us either recently or in the past, and may even be supressed so we are unaware of ‘why’ we are unwell or feeling the way we do right now. Triggers can include:
Viral or bacterial infections
Post-viral syndromes (such as after flu, EBV, or COVID)
Prolonged emotional stress or trauma
Overwork or physical burnout
Exposure to toxins or mould
Nutritional deficiencies
Hormonal imbalances
These triggers can weaken the body’s resilience, leaving energy systems struggling to recover.
Key Symptoms
Persistent fatigue lasting longer than 6 months
Poor concentration / “brain fog”
Unrefreshing sleep
Muscle aches and weakness
Headaches or sore throat
Worsening after physical or emotional exertion
- Depression
Acute Remedies for Fatigue
These remedies may be useful for periods of acute exhaustion:
China (Cinchona officinalis)
Great debility and weakness, especially after loss of fluids (blood loss, diarrhea, breastfeeding, or prolonged fevers).
Marked sensitivity to touch, noise, and even minor exertion.
Periods of exhaustion alternate with irritability or oversensitivity.
Weak digestion and bloating are common, with little energy to process food.
Suited to people worn out from long illness, malaria, or post-viral weakness.
Phosphoric acid
Profound, almost apathetic tiredness – both physical and mental.
Brain fog, dullness, and lack of motivation are strong features.
Wants to lie down, little interest in talking or engaging.
Often linked to grief, emotional strain, or prolonged stress.
Suited to young people or students who become debilitated after mental strain or disappointment.
Muriatic acid
Extreme weakness and prostration, even from the slightest exertion.
The patient feels so weak they may slide down in bed, unable to sit up or hold themselves upright.
Characteristic indifference and apathy – mentally and emotionally exhausted.
Often indicated after severe illness or when vitality is very low.
Picric acid
Brain and nervous system fatigue – “burnout remedy.”
Intense mental exhaustion with heaviness in the head and eyelids.
Fatigue worsens after mental effort, reading, or studying.
Often suited to students, professionals, or those who have overstrained the mind and nervous system.
Marked tiredness that improves only with complete rest.
Gelsemium
Heavy, dull, and droopy fatigue – eyelids, head, and limbs feel too heavy to move.
Trembling, weakness, and a sense of paralysis in the muscles.
Desire to be left alone, too tired to talk or think clearly.
Often used in post-viral states, flu, and anticipatory fatigue (before events, exams, performances).
Suited when the whole body feels like it has “run out of batteries.”
Stannum (Tin)
Weakness in the chest and voice – feels exhausted from speaking or using the lungs.
General weakness comes on rapidly, with trembling and a sensation of “hollowness” inside.
Better from gentle pressure, worse from talking, singing, or exertion.
Often needed after respiratory illness (bronchitis, pneumonia, TB) where fatigue lingers.
Arsenicum album
Restless yet exhausted – the person feels weak but cannot sit still, constantly moving or changing position.
Anxiety and fear (especially about health) accompany the weakness.
Great chilliness, always wants warmth.
Burning pains despite feeling icy cold.
Suited for those who feel drained after illness, food poisoning, or flu, with a mixture of weakness and anxiety.
Carbo vegetabilis
“The great reviver” in cases of collapse and extreme exhaustion.
Feels sluggish, cold, faint, and almost lifeless – but craves fresh, moving air (often wants windows open or a fan).
Poor circulation: cold hands and feet, blue lips, yet burning internally.
Weak digestion and flatulence, feels worse after eating.
Useful in states of near collapse after illness, hemorrhage, or long debility.
Chronic Remedies
For long-standing fatigue, deeper-acting remedies are always required. An experienced homeopath will look at your overall life and health picture (physical, mental, emotional), and the health history for you and your family, to find the best constitutional and miasmatic remedy.
I did have a short list of polycrest remedies written here but decided to remove it, as there are over 8000+ remedies to choose from, and it is all about the individual picture matched to a remedy, so a list of 10 remedies is not at all helpful to you!
I will say that Miasmatic Nosodes and Constitutional prescribing can be extremely supportive in rebuilding vitality and restoring wellbeing.
