Choosing The Right Homeopathic Remedy – Hello and welcome to another blog by Donna Sadzius! Let me preface this blog post to say that since I started learning Homeopathy in 1996, one of the Homeopaths I have been inspired by, is the teachings of Dr. Rajan Sankaran. My #1 favourite book of his (very well read) is The Soul of Remedies, and I dedicate this blog to Rajan and I hope you find it useful and interesting …

The Art of Listening to the Symptom

Homeopathy is not just about selecting a remedy; it is an art of listening … to the language of the body, the sensations, the peculiarities, and the inner experience that illness brings forth. Each symptom is a whisper from the vital force, guiding us toward balance. When we understand this language, we see that the choice of a remedy, the potency, and even the dose is not mechanical, but deeply individual.

Acute and Chronic Conditions are Two Very Different ‘Songs’

I love how Rajan Sankaran describes disease as a “song” that arises from within … a unique pattern of experience. In acute conditions, this song is loud, intense, and immediate. Think of a sudden high fever, a burn, or a bee sting. The symptoms are usually clear and direct, with the body crying out for quick attention. In such cases, remedies like Belladonna, Aconite, or Apis often stand out because their symptom patterns match this sudden flare of imbalance.

Chronic conditions, on the other hand, are like background music … softer but persistent. They are the melodies we sometimes stop hearing because they’ve been playing for years. Chronic issues such as eczema, digestive troubles, or depression require a deeper understanding of the person’s entire state, mentally, emotionally, and physically. This is where the genius of a skilled homeopath comes in: to listen for the underlying “song of life” that drives the chronic pattern, and to select a remedy that resonates with it at the deepest level.

Potency is the Strength of the Echo

Potency is not about “strong” or “weak” medicine, but about how deeply the remedy can resonate with the vital force. A 30c potency, for example, is often well-suited to many acute conditions. It can gently stimulate the body to correct itself. In contrast, a 200c or 1M potency may be needed when the state is intense, or when we need to touch the deeper, more subtle layers of the mind and emotions.

The choice of potency is not a rigid rule but is guided by the sensitivity of the individual and the nature of the illness. A sensitive person with an intense mental-emotional reaction may respond well to a higher potency, while someone with a robust constitution may do better with a lower potency repeated over time.

The Dose: Less is often More

This can be hard to wrap your head around if you’re new to homeopathy. The dose is not about the quantity of the substance, but about the quality of the response it evokes. A single dose, well-matched to the person’s state, can bring about a profound shift. Over-dosing or repeating too often can disturb the healing process.

To understand homeopathy, you need to understand this foundational concept – ‘The remedy does not heal; it awakens the vital force for the body to heal itself – (Sankaran)’. Once the remedy has initiated this movement, our job is to step back and let nature do its work. Only when symptoms return or the healing response stalls do we consider repeating or changing the remedy.

When to Work with a Homeopath

Acute conditions, when the symptoms are clear and straightforward, can often be treated at home with a basic knowledge of homeopathy. A parent may recognise the fiery, throbbing fever of Belladonna in their child or the shock of Aconite after a sudden fright.

But when the illness is chronic, recurring, or deeply rooted, working with an experienced homeopath is invaluable. Chronic states are complex; they involve patterns of sensation, perception, and reaction that often lie beneath conscious awareness. A homeopath, like a skilled listener, will discern this inner song and select a remedy that resonates with the whole person, not just the disease.

The Heart of Homeopathy and Finding the Similarity

The beauty of homeopathy lies in finding that “similar”—the remedy that mirrors the person’s unique pattern. It is less about treating a disease name and more about understanding the individual’s experience of disease.

When you are unsure, when the symptoms are confusing, or when the issue is long-standing, the best gift you can give yourself is to work with someone trained to hear your inner song. To finish off I’ll add a quote or Rajan Sankaran – “The remedy is not out there; it is in the story of your suffering. The homeopath simply helps you find it.”

Quick Guide: 5 Steps to Choosing a Homeopathic Remedy for Acute Conditions

  1. Observe the Totality – Notice not just the physical symptoms, but also the mental and emotional state. Is the person restless, fearful, sleepy, or unusually irritable?
  2. Look for the Peculiar – What stands out? In homeopathy, the strange, rare, and peculiar symptoms often lead us to the correct remedy.
  3. Match the Tempo – Acute illnesses are fast and intense, so choose a remedy with a matching pace (e.g., Aconite for sudden shock or fear, Belladonna for sudden heat and redness).
  4. Choose the Potency Wisely – For most acute conditions, start with 30C. A single dose may be enough; observe before repeating.
  5. Know Your Limits – If symptoms worsen, persist beyond 24–48 hours, or if the condition is serious, consult a professional homeopath or doctor.
